Here we take a look at how to get web hosting, what to expect and an introduction to how to manage your hosting with cPanel.

Ordering Web Hosting

When you have chosen a hosting company (see our recommended hosting companies) and decided on a hosting package (see our previous guide for more info – we recommend shared hosting to start with) you are now ready to order your hosting.

As with anything you buy, be sure to take a look at key things like refund policies and terms of use. When you are happy continue through the signup process and order your hosting. You will typically get discounts for ordering 12 months of hosting instead of 1 month at a time, so that is worth keeping in mind.

At this stage you may be asked if you want to register a domain name. Our recommendation is to use a seperate company to register domain names as they are cheaper and if you wish to move hosting company it is less hassle to do so. As a rough guide domain names should cost around $10 per year to register (our next guide details purchasing domain names).

After you have ordered you will receive a welcome email with all your login information and important details. Be sure to keep this email even if you don’t understand everything in it – some of it you will need when you start building your website and some of it you might not need until later.

You may see some of the following information on your welcome email:

• - Your hosting IP address, username and password
• - Your FTP login information (usually the same as above)
• - Your cpanel login information (usually the same as above)
• - Your nameservers (needed for „Pointing“ your domain name to your hosting )
• - Information on how to contact your hosting support if needed.
• - Your hosts help files and FAQs.

About cPanel

You may have heard the term cPanel before. It is an admin area that is used to manage hosting accounts. In cPanel you can do all kinds of things related to your hosting such as setting up email addresses, editing files, creating databases and setting up cron jobs. We will cover these tasks in more detail when required, but is important to know that cPanel is the place to do it.

The majority of web hosting companies (including those that we recommend) use cPanel to allow their customers to manage the hosting accounts. Our guides assume that this is the case for you. If it is not and you are struggling with any aspect of these guides, please contact our support team.

cPanel can typically be accessed by visiting http://www.yoursite.com/cpanel/ where „yoursite.com“ is your actual domain name. If your domain name has not been pointed to your hosting this may not work, and their are usually alternative ways to access your cPanel.

Once inside cPanel you will see a variety of options as well as information on your hosting account such as bandwidth use, disk space use and number of doman names added. There are help guides inside cPanel if you wish to read further on a particular feature.
